The HTRS SRA supports an 8- to 10-week program for medical (MD, DO) or graduate (PhD, MD/PhD, and PharmD) students working on targeted research projects in hemostasis and thrombosis. Proposed projects may be lab-based, clinical, or epidemiologic in design. Applicants are required to develop a research proposal in consultation with an experienced mentor. The goal is to provide students with mentorship and career development opportunities, including practice in developing a research proposal, working in a lab or clinical setting, and presenting the results of their work to other hemostasis and thrombosis professionals at a national meeting, preferably the HTRS Biennial Scientific Symposium. The total grant award is $8,000 USD and comprises a $5,000 award stipend for the student recipient, a $2,000 travel allowance to enable the student to report on their project at a national professional meeting, and $1,000 to support the student’s mentor and/or mentor’s laboratory.

Project Title
Lipoprotein(a) Regulation of Fibrinolysis in the Bone Marrow Niche During Hematopoietic Recovery
Mentor: Ze Zheng, MD, PhD
Tiffany’s research examines how fibrinolytic and lipid pathways influence hematopoietic recovery, inflammation, and thrombosis following cancer therapy. During the SRA-funded research period, she will investigate how lipid pathways affect the bone marrow microenvironment under cytotoxic stress, with the goal of identifying mechanisms that may connect cardiovascular risk factors with impaired recovery following cancer treatment.

Project Title
Conserved and Disease-Specific Molecular Programs in Human Platelets: Cross-Omic Integration of MPN and Neonatal Signatures
Mentor: Anandi Krishnan
Morgan’s research brings together her interests in platelet biology, developmental biology, and computational research. Her SRA project will integrate molecular signatures from myeloproliferative neoplasm platelets with the neonatal platelet proteome to better understand conserved and disease-specific programs in platelet biology. The award will support the development of preliminary data and a first manuscript as she continues toward a career as an independent investigator in hemostasis and thrombosis.

Exploring the Functional Role of Tandem Repeats in Fibrin(ogen) αC Region
Mentor: Washington Valence, Oakland University
Caela is a fifth-year PhD Physics candidate at Wake Forest University whose research focuses on how fibrinogen structure regulates fibrin formation and clot stability. Through the Student Research Award, she will develop recombinant fibrinogen variants and use scanning electron and confocal microscopy to investigate how differences in the αC region affect fibrin structure, extensibility, and network formation.
